The Most Underrated Sub Sandwich in Palm Beach County (and other local happenings)

Edition no. 2

Without Further Ado, Your Local News

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about the most underrated sandwich shop in Palm Beach County …. L-Dub Subs in Lake Worth.

Yes, I know you can find a BETTER sandwich elsewhere - but for the value and the fact that nobody talks about this place WHATSOEVER this is the steal of the century.

Located right off south J street in Lake Worth, this place is fairly accessible if you’re in West Palm proper or a little south, and the dollar to sandwich ratio combined with the friendly staff and nice selection put this place a step above many other spots.

Is Buccan sandwich shop tastier? Almost definitely - but are these sandwiches 50% cheaper for even more sandwich? And still excellent? Yes, that’s all true as well.

Been coming to L-Dub ever since I stumbled upon it the better part of a year ago and I am sold on the concept, the execution, and everything else about this place. Highly recommend and go check it out whenever you’re next in the area.

If interested, check out their website here for more info. And if you think there’s a MORE underrated sub in the area, LET ME KNOW !

And if you want to know what I recommend, read til the end ….

CHEAP GOLF SEASON ALMOST UPON US

Ladies and gentlemen - if you’re here out of season, the words I’m about to impart onto you will be magical. We are almost in the season of CHEAP GOLF !

I know it’s hard to wrap your mind around, but after a long, warm winter, snowbirds are migrating back north and those of us with our finger on the pulse (locals) are going to be able to play cheap rounds again, hopefully starting around June.

I’m here to recommend some cheap courses for extreme casuals like myself, who have a great day if we break 100 -

and our favorite, ESPECIALLY if you’re trying to score low …..

Poinciana (aka Poincy) who were kind enough to host a tournament among friends on Super Bowl Sunday.

At the end of the day, all four of these courses will provide a decent round - from my experience, LWB Golf Club can be a little dicey after it rains, but you can find the cheapest round there.

Atlantis is a nice, consistent course at a good price.

Okeeheelee has 27 (!) holes and is also cheap so good to mix it up, and for the price this is a course that is well taken care of.

And Poincy has WAY more par 3’s than the usual, so makes for a nice, quick, yet fun round on any given day. Typically fine conditions on all of these courses as well.

If you’re looking to take advantage of the summer season with a nice, quick and cost effective round, I’d recommend any of these courses in a heartbeat.

Spending Time Outdoors In PBC

When people come to South Florida, they want to go to the beach first and foremost. Maybe rent a boat, or partake in the activity mentioned in the previous section.

NOBODY talks about the beautiful nature that exists around here - and there is plenty of it.

A personal favorite, and potential hidden gem, is the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area, directly off Hypoluxo Road …

This park is near the beginning of the Hypoluxo Trail, an old footpath that used to lead down to Miami about 100 years ago, and was used by couriers to deliver mail … nowadays, it’s a decently sized park that exists right in the middle of an otherwise somewhat nondescript urban area.

If you’re the type who appreciates the natural scrub habitat you can find in these locations, check this one out ! It’s free of charge and is a great opportunity to get outside, acquire some Vitamin D, and maybe even see a rare Gopher Tortoise - an endangered keystone species in the area. If you see one, all you need to do is promise not to touch !

There are a few miles of trails, two lookout posts that give great views of the surrounding area, and as much wildlife as you’ll find anywhere not called the zoo in South Florida.

Pull up google maps and find the location if you’re feeling a nice, quick, walk in the woods to clear the head !

The Strangest Building In PBC (in a good way)

I don’t mean it in a bad way - but if you ever walk through downtown West Palm Beach, and PARTICULARLY Rosemary Square …

You may have stumbled across the Hotel Evernia, aptly named as it sits right on Evernia Street diagonally across from the brand new 360 Rosemary building.

And yet, this building looks ENTIRELY out of place compared to the surrounding city - it’s surrounded by brand new offices, new apartments, and new development.

But this year it turns 100 years old - essentially since Pangaea broke up if you put that into South Florida terms.

This hotel, by their own admission on their website, has survived World Wars, the Great Depression, countless hurricanes, and likely any other obstacle you can think of in the century since its inception, and has remained a family owned business the entire way.

Front Desk at the Hotel Evernia

In an area of the country where almost everything you see was built since the turn of the century, it’s refreshing to see a local business owned & operated by a family, while still keeping some of that historic mystique.

With it’s location right in the heart of downtown West Palm, this is a building I parked across the street from my first day in town and it has fascinated me ever since.

If you want the most unique staycation you can find in the area, OR you’re reading this from out of town and want to mix it up, you can check out their website and book a room here.

My Sub Recommendation

And now, for the part you’ve all been waiting for …

Should you make it to L-Dub Subs, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Italian. Basic, but an excellent sandwich. Well put together on all fronts. Don’t double guess this one.
